Residents rejoice as the Kazhinjur lake in katpadi reached its full storage capacity and overflowed after two years.

A total of 82 places in the district have been identified as prone to inundation and 94 relief centres kept ready to house residents of the flood-prone localities, Collector S.A. Raman said.

On Saturday, the departments of revenue, fire and rescue services, police and Vellore Corporation demonstrated their preparedness in rescuing residents from a flood-prone area at Kansalpet.

The Collector reviewed their preparedness and inspected various rescue equipment such as rubber boats, ropes, cutting equipment kept ready by the fire and rescue services and the police department, according to a press release.

Teams in each zone

Mr. Raman said that a team comprising five members had been formed in each zone to inspect low-lying areas in the Corporation limit and take up precautionary works.

The teams had taken up inspections in the last six days.

With Kansalpet prone to flooding during rains, there was a plan to construct a six-foot-high wall on both sides of the canal near the railway overbridge as a permanent solution. To prevent water stagnation at Thideer Nagar, there was a plan to construct a small bridge across Nicholson canal at a cost of ₹18 lakh.

The Corporation and the Revenue department have been advised to remove encroachments that obstruct the flow of water. Precautionary measures to prevent flooding during the monsoon were being taken across the district, the release said.
