Agartala: Police have arrested a man in connection with the murder of an activist of the BJP in north Tripura. Sunil Deb was found dead with cuts on both his legs at Srirampur in Kanchanpur on Saturday.
“The assailants cut the veins of legs of the victim. They ensured that he bled to death,” a police officer said over phone from Kanchanpur.
The murder caused tension in the area with BJP supporters staging noisy protests. In Agartala, the BJP leadership termed the murder politically motivated and held the ruling CPI(M) responsible for the latest fatal attack on a party worker. “At least six BJP workers have been killed and over 50 critically wounded in planned CPI(M) attacks so far this year,” party spokesperson Prasenjit Chakraborty said.
CPI(M) denied the charge and condemned the incident. It said the BJP was trying to create communal and ethnic tensions to disturb law and order situation in Tripura ahead of Assembly elections due in February 2018.
Amid brewing political tension, Tripura government sought additional 260 companies of Central forces for deployment ahead of the Assembly elections. All of the 11 battalions of the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) would be also utilised for election purposes, government officials said.
