A 1,500-seating capacity auditorium named after India’s celebrated litterateur-philosopher Rabindranath Tagore is expected to come up in Matara in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka by September 2017.

The structure will be located on the campus of the University of Ruhuna. It will come up on 3,000 sq.m. The Indian government is undertaking the project at a cost of 265 million Sri Lankan rupees. A contract for the project was signed here on Thursday in the presence of India’s High Commissioner Y.K. Sinha, D.G.M.V. Hapuarachchi, State Secretary, Ministry of Higher Education and Gamini Senanayake, Vice-Chancellor, University of Ruhuna.

The auditorium will “reflect the close cultural links that bind India and Sri Lanka as well as cater to the needs of the students of the University of Ruhuna and the people of the Southern Province,” said a release issued by the Indian High Commission on Friday.
