A vendor was critically wounded when GRP personnel opened fire while trying to foil an attempt by robbers to loot passengers travelling by Jamalpur-Kiul DMU train at Dhanauri railway station in Bihar’s Lakhisarai district in the wee hours today.

A group of robbers attempted to loot the passengers when the train reached the Dhanauri railway station in the Jamalpur-Kiul section of the East Central Railway but the GRP personnel escorting the train soon intervened and opened fire to foil the robbery bid.

A stray bullet hit the vendor Rakesh Kumar of nearby Pavai village, leaving him critically injured, Superintendent of Police (Railway) Bimal Kumar said.

Earlier reports quoting the SP(Railway) had said that the vendor was killed in the firing.

On hearing the incident, angry villagers reached the station, stopped the train and confined the GRP personnel for more than two hours.

They were later persuaded by senior district and railway to call off their agitation and set free the GRP personnel.

The injured vendor was admitted to the Patna Medical College Hospital where he was being operated upon, Mr. Kumar said.

Taking serious note of the incident, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar directed the DGP Anand Shankar to get the incident inquired into and submit a report.

The chief minister also directed that the role of GRP personnel in the incident be probed and to take legal action against them, if necessary.

He asked the state Home Secretary Amir Subhani to ensure full medical facilities to the victim at the PMCH.
