An influential ruling Awami League MP and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s close relative narrowly escaped an attack with minor injuries when a bomb was hurled on the car he was about to get into, seriously injuring at least seven of his supporters.
Police said Fazle Noor Taposh escaped the attack with minor injuries as a powerful bomb exploded as he came out of his private law chamber and was about to get into the car around 9 pm.
“The car was badly damaged but Barrister Taposh was almost unhurt,” a police official at the scene told PTI.
He added that the lawmaker was flanked by nearly a dozen supporters and office staff while at least seven of them were severely injured as the bomb hit the car.
A close aid of Taposh, who is the son of a cousin of Hasina, said the lawmaker immediately left the scene in another car and took refuge at the prime minister’s official residence while the wounded people were rushed to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
“The attackers left the scene quickly after hurling a bomb which missed the target but injured 15 other people on the spot,” UNB news agency quoted an eye witness.
Police said they could not immediately confirm the source of the blast.
