If life is art, shouldn’t you live in colour? With 2017 just around the corner, it’s time for new beginnings – for you and your home.

Bid adieu to the old, and pick one of the colours recommended by colour experts across the world.

All these gorgeous colours have one thing in common – they can go from polished to playful, calming to energetic, formal to relaxed, and traditional to modern. Which one’s your pick for 2017?

Pantone’s Pick: GREENERY

Pantone has chosen a fresh and revitalising shade that’s symbolic of new beginnings as it’s pick for 2017. Say hello to Greenery. Laurie Pressman, vice president with Pantone Color Institute, says, “Green signals vitality, energy, and warmth from the sun.” She said the yellow-green colour was chosen because it represents rebirth and regeneration, adding that the hue is symbolic of “where we are in our lives and what we desire”.

Benjamin Moore’s Pick: SHADOW

This dusky eggplant hue is refined, confident and versatile, and is the perfect backdrop for warm metals like brass, gold and copper. Explaining the choice, Ellen O’Neill, Benjamin Moore’s creative director, says ‘Shadow’ is a master of ambience. “It is a colour that calls to mind a ‘past’, yet it can also make a contemporary, colour-confident statement. Shadow is sophisticated, provocative and poetic; it can bring energy to a space or harmony and a moment of respite,” she said.

Sherwin-Williams’ Pick: POISED TAUPE

A mix of grey and brown, this serene shade is cosy and down to earth. The director of colour marketing for Sherwin-Williams, Sue Wadden, says, “Poised Taupe celebrates everything people love about cool grey as a neutral, and also brings in the warmth of brown, taking a colour to an entirely new level. Not cool or warm, nor grey or brown, Poised Taupe is a weathered, woodsy neutral bringing a sense of cosiness and harmony.”

PPG Paints’ Pick: VIOLET VERBENA

Moody purple goes a but grey and gets a chameleon-like nature with this colour for the next year. Dee Schlotter, senior colour marketing manager at PPG, says, “Violet Verbena is at once as nostalgic as it is modern. It’s substantial in a world that can sometimes seem so temporary, luxurious in a harsh world that needs pampering, and introspective and private in an invasive world.”

CIL’s Pick: ANTIQUE VIOLET

Another shade of violet makes it to the list. But this mid-tone lavender shade has a strong leaning towards the blue end of the spectrum. Greying it down has made it a tad more neutral. Alison Goldman, brand manager for the CIL paint brand of PPG, has described the colour as a “beautifully sophisticated and muted mid-tone shade of purple that leans heavily towards a blue-grey.” Think summer skies and serene tranquility.

Dutch Boy Paints’ Pick: IN THE BRUSH & THUNDER STORM

The paintmaker’s chosen shades for the next year are two willow-green hues drawn from Captivate, the brand’s four-trend colour story. These two colours work in different ways; try them to add colour, create a calm ambience or ground the entire décor scheme. Carolyn Noble, Dutch Boy Paints Manager of Colour Marketing & Design, says, “With this year’s Colour of the Year selections, we are making it easier for DIYers and home owners to add a soft, serene and on-trend pop of colour in their home.”
