• Purba Bardhaman-based Rajib Debnath hails from an impressive lineage of master jamdani weavers. His family’s specialty is handspun muslin jamdani, achieved by mixing the muslin and jamdani looms, which they supplied to the royal family of Bardhaman in 1923, and now to museums all over the world, from Mumbai to Cambodia. “A single design using a 300-thread count will take a weaver a minimum of six months to create and, as the count goes up, it can take almost two years to finish a single dupatta ,” he says. His 180 weavers go through strenuous training in his four workshops. “After the initial training year, the weaver takes five years to complete each level, until he reaches the fourth and final one, which consists of the master weavers, an exclusive group of 45,” he says, describing the arduous 20-year process.
