The latest trend on Instagram is an easy way to look glam while you’re at your most relaxed — fresh out the shower. But as with everything on this photo-sharing platform, this too is carefully curated, showcasing flawless moments of fashion.
Photographer Mario Testino has been photographing his famed #TowelSeries since 2014, which has featured the likes of Zendaya, Justin Bieber and Pharell Williams among many others. But bathleisure, as the trend has come to be known, was brought to the limelight by singer Rihanna, when she posed with an Emilio Pucci towel wrapped around her head for Vogue Paris in November 2017. Then there was Rita Ora, who turned up at the MTV Europe Music Awards in a terrycloth robe and towel from menswear label Palomo Spain.
Here, we break down the five essentials to nail the bathleisure look.
1. Robe:
Who hasn’t spent at least 15 minutes wrapped in their towel, scrolling through their social media site of choice? Now, you can do the same in a terrycloth robe — like a pink one from Versace’s Le Jardin collection, which features butterfly details on the cuffs, pockets and belt ($550). If you prefer plain, go for the Hermes Quartz bathrobe ($1,525).
2. Towel:
Forget the hairdryer, and wrap up your freshly washed locks in a towel turban. To channel Rihanna, pick this printed one from Emilio Pucci’s Spring 2018 collection, with shades of mustard, yellow, purple, black and white ($880). For a personalised, monogrammed one, opt for Matouk’s Parterre body sheet in white ($265).
3. Red lipstick:
Just because you’re lounging about, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t put on a full face glam. Most important to the look is a bright red, like Fenty Beauty’s Stunna lip paint ($24) , which suits a wide range of skin tones. There’s also La Bouche Rouge’s Regal Red ($135) , which comes with a refill, in a leather case that can be monogrammed with your initials.
4. Jewellery:
Dior’s new collection is inspired by the Versailles Palace, and the Vanite Diamant necklace is perfect to channel Rita Ora’s EMA red carpet look. Layer it with the necklace from Bulgari’s Le Magnifiche collection, with roughly 80 carats of round brilliant-cut diamonds set in 18-karat white gold. Or try the Agrafe earrings by Cartier: 18K white gold, with a total of 73 brilliant-cut diamonds and freshwater pearls. (Stores at DLF Emporio, New Delhi.)
5. High heels:
Although you’ll be putting your feet up for this look, skip the fluffy slippers and strap on a sky-high number, like Nicholas Kirkwood’s elegant Lola Pearl Sandal in silver. Charlotte Olympia’s 10th anniversary collection features a seriously extra pair of Atlantis heels, inspired by the mythical lost city.
