The festival of colours is here. Associated with the vibrant shades of spring, pichkaris, water balloons, bhang and get-togethers with family and friends, Holi is also when your choice of outfit is reasonably important. If you are tired of the typical all-white ensembles and are in a dilemma about what to wear, here is some advice from fashion experts.

According to Swatti Kapoor, Consultant Designer, Jaypore, “The beauty of Holi dressing is you can never have enough colour. A great way to stand out from the sea of whites is to wear pale or neon colours, or even mix them! Kurtas and midi dresses are perfect for the occasion, as are longer skirts. Another great way to accessorise is to wrap a dupatta like a turban. This is also a great way to protect your hair.”

“Hints of white with pops of colour is the way to go this Holi,” opines Niyati Manoj, a freelance designer, adding, “Forget all-white ensembles and look to break the monotony. A long white kurta can be worn with your oldest pair of ripped denims. Roll up your jeans a bit to give it that cropped look and you can wear a pair of metallic kolhapuri chappals. With temperatures soaring, you might also consider wearing a white crop top with neon coloured shorts.”

For those who prefer to steer away from the kurta/kameez outfits, Swatti suggests interesting ways to style your look.

“On Holi, comfort is key. Loose cotton pants, billowy tops and flared skirts are a great way to keep your look more contemporary. Since tie-dye is a big trend, you can opt for a tie-dyed shirt and cotton pants. A cool pair of denim cut-offs with a shorter kurta is also a good Indo-Western look,” she states.

Stylist and blogger, Trupti Nambiar, says, “Palazzos, worn with crop tops are chic. You can pair printed or plain palazzos in brighter colours with a solid colour noodle strap top or even a bralette. Ikat is in, so even a pair of ikat cotton cigarette trousers with a comfy button down top would make for a good contemporary outfit. Add some inexpensive junk jewellery to give it a desi twist.”

Considering that Holi calls for lots of fun and frolic outdoors, “tight clothing is a big no-no since it can become constricting, once wet,” Swatti says, adding, “Since a large part of Holi is spent outdoors, it is not advisable to wear dark colours, as it can be uncomfortable.”

Must have accessories for the day include a pair of fashionable sunglasses, a set of sturdy flip flops and, of course, a PVC bag to carry your belongings.

And with that, we hope your Holi celebration is as colourful as your outfit is!
