A promo video on ‘Heart in the Tummy —for a joyful womb experience’ is doing the rounds on social media. It asks women to think beyond hospitals and gynaecologists and do things to make their pregnancy and child birth joyful.

“It is about making a woman aware of her body and creating awareness on maternal rights,” elaborates Swati Jagdish of Coimbatore Parenting Network ( CPN), that has organised the event. CPN is a Facebook peer group with over 4000 members that promotes topics like beastfeeding, informed birthing, early childhood development...

The one-day event highlights alternative birthing options that are available, role of educators, birth support, pregnancy health and fitness.

Priyanka Idicula, director of Birth Village in Kochi, is the key speaker. A certified professional midwife, she will talk about the midwifery scene in India. “This is the second. We had a good response last year. A lot of women approached the birth village to have natural birth. Some explored options like hypnobirthing techniques. Awareness on breast feeding picked up. Many mothers came forward to donate breast milk to the breast milk bank at the Coimbatore Medical College,” says Jagdish.

“I had a successful VBAC( Vaginal birth after C-section). Do you want to know more?” asks Haritha Arun, Lamaze Childbirth Educator, another speaker at the event. She is also the director of Thalir in Madurai.

Other speakers from Coimbatore include Anupama Vijayanand, childbirth educator and director of Vriksham, Swati Jagdish, lactation counsellor and psychologist and Vishnupriya, hypobirthing and fertility consultant from Thaai.

While Anupama will throw light on the role of birthing partner during labour, Vishnupriya talks about hypnobirthing techniques that reduce pain during contractions and avoid interventions like epidural.

Jagdish who is also a LEAN coach ( lifestyle, exercise, attitude and nutrition) will take you through not just a healthy pregnancy approach, but also breast feeding and post-partum care. She says, “ The event aims to bust myths and fears associated with pregnancy.”

The event is open for pregnant women, wannabe parents, partners who would like to learn more about the process and even grandparents.
