Lankans fight back against Aussies in second innings

Kusal Mendis battled bravely to push Sri Lanka to a position of strength in the third day of the first Test against Australia at Pallekele.

Unbeaten on 169, Mendis’ maiden century helped Lanka erase their first innings deficit and build a lead of 196. Bad light and rain stopped play in the post-tea session, with Sri Lanka’s score at 282 for 6 after 80 overs.

Indians undergo solid training

Indians began their preparation for the second Test at Sabina Park in Jamaica with an all-out workout session to help them acclimatise with the conditions.

West Indies, meanwhile, have included 19-year-old uncapped fast bowler Alzarri Joseph in the squad, which now includes 14 players.

TENNIS

Djokovic battles past Muller

Novak Djokovic’s first outing since the early exit at Wimbledon was not an easy one, as he had to spend over 100 minutes on court to defeat Gilles Muller. Djokovic reached the third round of the Rogers Cup in Toronto after beating Muller 7-5, 7-6 (3).

At Montreal, Venus Williams and home favourite Eugenie Bouchard progressed to the next round with straight sets win over Barbora Strycova and Dominika Cibulkova respectively.
