As a child Manish Kumar never considered photography as a career option. “I have been a traveller since birth as my father was in Army. Travelling has always been a passion. Photography is a new companion,” he points out. Now the techie with Computer Associates Technologies in Gachibowli, finds his weekends busier than weekdays, as he goes off on short solo trips, capturing memories with his Canon 60D. The trend of software professionals pursuing their passion on weekends is no novelty but for some, the activity earns accolades and awards. His website boasts of his achievements including an award in Photo Expo 2015, getting photographs published in National Geographic Magazine and Inspiro India. Manish also does select weddings because ‘two projects per year pay for his travel expenditure.’

Photography is a popular hobby among techies as they “lead busy lives and capturing moments through pictures is a special joy,” observes Saurabh Chatterjee who conducts photography workshops and photo tours. The former IT professional with 15 years experience says, “My dream is to see and discover India.” Initially he walked a tightrope balancing his career and interest. “I started teaching photography to share my knowledge among friends,” he says. With several awards for his works, he undertakes photo tours and holds workshops across India.

Anubha Thandlay of NTT Data puts her best foot forward on rocks. As assistant organiser of Great Hyderabad Adventure Club, she organises adventure tours on weekends. “I attended a session of rock climbing two years ago and have since explored trekking and done a couple of treks in the Himalayas,” she says. Besides Anubha’s hobby has helped in her self-discovery. “At one of our treks at Kumaraparvata, I ended up cooking for the whole group; though I am not a great cook. Also I’ve become disciplined and made new friends,” she smiles.

Having a daily goal is a sure way to keep up the momentum, believes Velavan Sivaswamy who takes dance-inspired-fitness classes twice every week. “Dance has been a passion since college days. I couldn’t make it my career as it’s not easy to get into the limelight,” he explains. He adds, “Dancing helps one remain fit and one can enjoy it without monotony,” he points out.
