Combine comfort and style

Be it Serena Williams smashing it off in a game or Deepika Padukone at a glam event – their feet are tucked into stylish sneakers.

Flip through a fashion magazine and your eyes will feast on glamorous models, with never ending legs, sport sneakers with élan. So, what’s the news? That sneakers are in. If you’re wondering how to rock in this trend, listen up to what experts are saying.

The experts’ take

According to Abhilasha Bahl, a women’s wear expert for an e-commerce platform, “Sneakers are no longer only for gyms. They have become a style statement. The fashion world is experiencing sneaker fever and trendy sneakers are a choice meant for balanced functionality and right aesthetics.”

Stylist and blogger, Pranita Mehta, says: “Luxury is going street style and it’s interesting to see how people pull off haute couture with casual sneakers. I can wear sneakers all day long as it helps me move fast and dance faster at parties!”

“For that smart casual getup, sneakers are your go-to option this season. You don’t have to be a runner to sport them and contrary to what most people think, sneakers can look good on anyone,” says Noyonika Gupta, a modelling aspirant.

Picking the perfect pair

“Bold and bright colours like neons, ink blues, reds, etc., are popular when it comes to sneakers. From comic patterns, typographic prints, and all whites to metallic embellishments, stores have stocked up an exhaustive range to choose from,” Pranita observes.

Abhilasha recommends, “Choose sneakers in floral prints or bright solids to add colour to the winter attire. If you are looking to play on the big monochrome trend this Autumn/Winter 2015, then opt for pure white ones. They look great when paired with all white or black and white ensembles.” As colour blocking is in, you can go in for a pair that features one bold colour juxtaposed against white. Suede high tops are trendy if you’re looking for a softer, more feminine look. Jewel toned and tribal prints are great options too. Frayed detailing on your sneakers is also considered cool.

Styling your sneakers

“International trends are setting a hybrid mood. Whether it’s a ripped pair boyfriend denims with black boots or an elegant dress worn with high heels, sneakers are finding their way into the closets of style conscious women. A relaxed shirt dress, an A-line dress or a pencil skirt, whatever you choose, put on a pair of sneakers for a statement look,” says Pranita. Abhilasha suggests, “To make a statement pair then with flowy silhouettes, calf-length skirts, or flirty dresses.”

Karuna Rampal, a freelance designer, says, “I’d wear a pair of black trainers with neutral colours. Sneakers look great with short dungarees, rolled up boyfriend jeans, short playsuits, and cotton shorts. As colder months lie ahead, you can wear sneakers with a flared knit skirt.”

Do’s and don’ts

“It’s important to balance your outfit,” says Pranita adding, “When you choose colourful sneakers, pair a dress or outfit that coordinates the look rather than opting for something loud. Colour blocking is another trick to a well-coordinated look. White sneakers look good with almost everything. Try a denim dress with colourful sneakers sometime.”

As far as the don’ts go, Abhilasha says, “Skip the visible sock when sporting this trend. Opt for ankle length socks which don’t spoil the look of your funky shoes.”
