Introduction : A family that adopted an Indian puppy tells us why it’s the best choice – both for the dogs and the people
When Rocky was a one-month-old pup, his siblings and mother were killed on the streets. He subsisted on scraps provided by a woman who later shifted him to a safe place. Thanks to Apoorva Prasad who heard his story and decided to bring him home, Rocky has come a long way from the timid, scrawny pup he once was. Apoorva’s mother Lalitha proudly describes her daughter as soft-natured and sensitive. “She wanted only a homeless pet and kept looking at pictures wondering which one to adopt”.
Lalitha reveals that breed was never a criterion for choosing their pet and adds that foreign dogs that are bred in India have major issues with our climate. “At the vet’s clinic, I saw one pedigree dog being sheared for the summer. There was fur everywhere”. Being asthmatic, Lalitha feels that mongrels are a good choice as they have thin coats and shed less fur.
She often thinks fondly of Shiva and Sobhana Rani, the couple that kept Rocky safe until his adoption was finalised. “I must thank them for getting us our Rocky. My husband has totally fallen for him. He buys him so many toys and spends a lot of time playing with him”, she says, adding that Rocky has a sixth sense. “He understood, right from day one that Apoorva is the sibling and I’m the mother. He’s the raja in this house. He always manages to get his way!”
