With a contemporary, clean feel and kind staff, the new Oasis Spa and Salon in Anna Nagar is a way to get out from under the summer sun with some pampering and relaxation.
As I open the salon's door, the cool air whisks away the June heat from my skin; the same heat and humidity that makes my hair a frizzy mess. I am here to try out their hair treatment, that is meant to give you silky and healthy locks. Hopefully it will take care of my frizz.
When I arrive, they put me into a silver gown, and sit me down. Oasis is neat and modern in decoration, with black leather chairs and a purple and white motif, but does not have the “too-big” feeling of an institution, making the visit a personal experience.
The staff is quiet and sweet. First, they examine my hair to assess the type of treatment they should pursue. Generally, the biggest problems customers have are unruly, dry hair or dandruff. For each, there is a different cure, and the treatment is customised to each person's particular needs.
Pamper session
After they diagnose my hair, they get to work. They start by washing, and then put in a special moisturising cream. While they wait for the moisturiser to set in, they massage my head, back, and arms, relaxing me completely. I listen to quiet oldies in the background.
Next, they put my head under a steamer, to open the pores and make sure that the moisturiser is absorbed into the scalp. Then, they rinse and blow dry. When I walk out, I feel like I am in one of those hair commercials where the women's hair bounce and glistens, not even looking real. Needless to say, my frizz is gone.
The owner, Nalini Raymond, suggests that treatments be done about once a month to keep hair healthy. After around six treatments, the difference in the healthiness of your hair will be visible and you will have that sleekness every day. Treatment costs start at about Rs. 850 depending on such things as length and thickness. Though it may not be a place to bring the girls for a gossip session, Oasis is a great place to retreat for some “me” time.
The thought that “Beauty is pain” is an old wives' tale, at least at Oasis Spa and Salon.
