A census is taken not only for humans. Eight of us, belonging to the Enviro Club of WCC, surveyed trees in the city. A tree survey is a process where trees are identified, located geographically, checked for health, the stresses on it commented on, and also physically examined. We took a census of the trees in areas near our college and submitted our report to the Chennai Corporation.
Vital contributors
Many found it funny when I told them that we were going on a tree survey. Trees are the lungs of earth. They should be given a lot of importance. If not for these trees, we cannot breathe.
I was amazed because there were different species of trees in just one avenue. There were many gulmohars, while Rain Trees followed. Wild almonds were also frequent. I was surprised to see that Neem trees were few. Fishtail palms fascinated me as its leaves looked like the tail fin of fish. There are lots more adorning our city.
I was worried to see many tres had been nailed several times to attach bill boards and telephone boxes. Some trees were choked by cables. I also noticed that many big trees that protrude into the compound wall of buildings were being cut. Sadly, deep marks on the bark were also a common sight. We, as responsible citizens or caring humans, must look after these treasures given to us by Nature. While these trees give us shade, fruit, beauty, pure air, and shelter for many animals we should in fact give them only one thing in return: Life.
