Movie: 7aum Arivu

Cast: Surya, Shruti Haasan, Johnny Nguye

“7aum Arivu”, the much-awaited Surya-Murgadoss-Harris combo with the likes of Shruthi Haasan making a debut in Kollywood, has a story par excellence but the screenplayis on a topsy-turvy ride, which, I suppose, was done to increase its commercial value.

Glitches

The first half hour of the movie which explains about Bodhidharma was neatly portrayed. I feel the same tempo could have been maintained throughout the movie. Having a villain of high stature like Johnny Ngugen, the director has not used him wisely. The concept of hypnotism was exploited in the movie and the sequence of scenes in which Dong Lee (Johnny Ngugen) hypnotises everything he comes across plays with the audience's nerves. After that glitch, the film doesn't get back to its initial rhythm till the gripping climax.

Another aspect of the movie, which I felt was over-done, was the profession of love for Tamil which was reiterated at many unsuitable instances in the movie. Had that been restricted only to Surya's monologue in the climax speech, the impact of his words would have been greater.

Performances

Coming to the lead actors' performances, Surya has done his part perfectly and has also maintained his excellent physique right through the movie. Shruti Hassan, has got an excellent launch pad in Kollywood having shared almost equal screen space as Surya.

She has acted well in the movie and her Tamil is such a relief compared to the much-heard shrill and routine voices of the dubbing artists! A big drawback in this flick is the music. The songs and BGM are sub-standard and don't gel with the scenes. The timing of the songs is also pathetic.

Bottomline: With so much hype around “7aum Arivu”, the director could have focused more on working with a better screenplay.
