Many people dream big. I don’t. Rather, I like to cherish life’s simple joys and enjoy the gift of every day. I live for the moment and I’m content with what I get every single day. My name is Murugan. I’m 33 years old and I live in Thippasandra. I consider my job very important since only if I do my work daily will the people around me look smart and professional at their work place. I love seeing people dressed up smartly in the clothes I launder for them. That is what gives me contentment.

Hailing from the town of Dharmapuri in Taml Nadu, I moved to Bangalore around 12 years ago and made this beautiful city my home. I did not earn a proper livelihood working in Dharmapuri’s spinning mills. My salary was insufficient and I could not make ends meet. So I made the decision to move to Bangalore since most of my relatives already work here in the same laundry business.

I moved first to Thippasandra and have stayed here ever since. My business is going good. The other laundry people in this area are all my relatives and we get along very well. We have no hassles in our business.

People around here know me well since they’ve seen me work diligently for 12 years. It’s great to earn people’s trust and live up to their expectations. I’m happy I’ve not had any complaints from anyone. It’s also a great feeling to have people around here greet me on the road with a smile when they recognise me. It makes me feel significant in this society.

Why I chose this occupation? I always wanted to be my own boss. If I was in any other job, I would have to listen to my superiors and follow orders. In this line of work, I work independently. And I also get to visit my mother and father in Dharmapuri twice a month. It’s convenient this way.

I love Bangalore. The climate in Tamil Nadu is hot and the drinking water is not very good. But here, the climate is very nice. And moreover this area has a lot of Tamil-speaking people from different parts of the state. So it feels like a second home.

I’ve seen Bangalore change a lot during my time here. This locality itself was a guava orchard almost 20-25 years back. But now, a lot of places around here are developing fast. It’s nice now and these changes are good.

I’m married and I have a little daughter studying in UKG here. I want her to study in the English medium school and work here itself. . I want my profession to end with me. I don’t want my daughter to end up in the same business. I dream she’ll stand on her own feet and set her life’s course on something big to achieve. I will support her dreams all the way. I also want to own a house here. It’s nice to have an own house. I’m content with what I have and I am able to sustain my family.
