If denim is a way of life for you, then you must know there are so many interesting ways to wear it. Borrowing from the style files of the 1980s and the 1990s, dungarees are back in fashion. Typically worn over another layer of clothing, today’s overalls are comfy yet chic, and come in various styles.

Ruchika Jiandani, a fashion entrepreneur says: “This season is all about experimenting. So you can choose from among distressed, shaded, washed out, ripped, slim fit, or boot cut styles. In terms of colours again, the options are aplenty. I’m a fan of well-fitted dungarees in light blue that can be teamed with a polka dot t-shirt or one that bears Breton stripes. With colder months ahead, you could even go in for knitted tops to match your overalls.”

If vintage is your cup of tea, designer Niyati Manoj, says: “Washed and bleached out overalls which are paired with a pale beige printed shirt or a floral top in mint or peach, a lace or appliqué blouse, would look great. You can complete your look with retro-inspired sunglasses and low heel tie-up sandals. A straw fedora would look classy too.”

For that street-style inspired look, cuffed style dungarees are a must have. Wear it with a monochrome long sleeved top and a pair of smart sneakers. Dungarees in black and indigo are also cool choices.

Dark dungarees can look fabulous when worn with a classic white button-down shirt. Don’t forget to sport your Wayfarers. If you’re a little more daring, you could wear a bandeau or cropped top underneath your overalls. Aviators and leopard print sandals complete the look.

Dungaree skirts and shorts have a fan following, especially among the college goers. “They’re cute, fun, and flirty. You can wear them with very feminine tops and tees. I like that you even get printed dungarees that come in bright and contrasting shades, with quirky designs and prints. They are an excellent option for a fun outing or a trek, if worn with the right footwear,” says Shreyaa John, a collegian.

If you are petite, long dungarees can be overwhelming, so shortalls are the way to go. As the temperature dips, stylists suggest you wear them over tights and layer a full-sleeved shirt or cardigan on top. Dungarees need not be limited to casual wear alone. “Pinstripe overalls are a great option and go well with a solid shirt or a floral tank top. To give it that polished look, bring out your cat-eye sunglasses and flaunt a pair of open toe high-heeled sandals or pumps. You could also style them with a flannel shirt and a tweed blazer.

To bring in that pop of colour, you could opt for yellow or fuchsia coloured pumps,” opines Anuradha T.S., a fashion blogger. Ill-fitted dungarees and baggy tops are to be avoided.
