Lullabies are special; they stay on in our memories. The lilting ‘aararo aareeraaro’ has inspired musicians the world over. Twenty-five-year-old Serena Kern who practises Law in the U.K., has come up with a song titled ‘Lullaby’, inspired by what her mother sung to her when she was a little girl. The track, which is part of her latest album, is to be officially launched in the city today.
Getting nostalgic
A Western pop song with a fusion of Tamil melody, ‘Lullaby’ is embellished with a melodic chorus of ‘aararo’, says Serena who has also written the lyrics. “Composer Sunny Viswanath has done the musical arrangements for the song, and Rison Muttichukaran has played the flute,” she adds. The song’s video, which is available on YouTube, features a nostalgic Serena who visits her childhood home to dwell on the memories each object in it brings to her mind. It also has footage of the singer from her younger days. “I hope people relate to it,” she says. “It tells the story of the best moments in my life.” Serena will perform the song at the launch.
‘Lullaby’ follows Serena’s debut album Sui Generis that has three songs. “It’s a legal term that means ‘one of a kind’,” explains Serena. She says that the title describes her music. “It is a mix of Western and Indian.” Of Swiss-Indian origin, Serena spent her childhood in Coonoor. She did her schooling in Udhagamandalam and went on to study Law at the London School of Economics. ‘Better To Have Loved’, a track that is also part of her new album, will be launched along with ‘Lullaby’. It also features Fazal Qureshi’s tabla.
Music, for Serena, is something that she goes back to after a long day at work. She feels that her career in Law has helped her musically. “Law and music complement each other,” she says.
