The skin around my mouth is dark, and I also have facial hair in the area. Please suggest a home remedy.— Radhika

Home remedies do not help remove facial hair, but if used regularly over a period of time, are said to lessen hair growth. You may try any of the following remedies. They will also help lighten the skin colour around the mouth. Make a thick paste of sugar, lemon juice and water and apply it in the direction of hair growth. Wash off when dry. Apply once or twice a week. Apply a paste of turmeric powder and milk on the face, and rub it into the skin with a circular motion. This is said to discourage facial hair, but it may leave a slight yellowish tinge on the skin.

Dark colours will make you look slimmer. So will vertical stripes, V-necklines and straight cuts. Wear single-colour outfits, set off with printed, sequinned, embroidered, shaded or decorated ‘chunnis' or scarves. Avoid large prints. Opt for straight sleeves; avoid puffed sleeves and frills. Avoid very tight or very loose clothes. Simplicity is the keyword.

Conditioners coat the hair and provide protection. They are useful for dry and unmanageable hair. Creamy conditioners should not be applied on oily or dandruff-prone hair. Henna is a natural conditioner. You can also use a hair rinse to add shine and soften the hair. Add a handful of fresh or dried marigold flowers to three cups of hot water. Allow to stand for an hour. Strain and cool the water and use as a final rinse. Or, have a tea-water and lemon rinse. Re-boil used tea leaves in about five cups of water. Cool and strain. Add the juice of a lemon. Your rinse is ready.

Use rose water every day to tone the skin. Store it in the refrigerator and soak cotton wool pads in it. First, wipe the skin with a pad, and then pat the skin briskly with it. Use a facial scrub twice a week. Or, mix ground almonds with yoghurt. Dried and powdered lemon and orange peel can also be added to this paste. Dried, powdered mint (pudina) leaves also help add a glow. Apply this on the face and rub gently on the skin with small circular movements. Wash off with water.

I have oily skin. What type of facial should I go in for? should do in the beauty parlour?— Kowsalya

An oily skin is prone to blackheads, pimples, acne, spots and open pores. If having a facial at a parlour, you should go in for a cleansing regimen with clean-up, toning and mask. Exfoliation with a scrub may be done for blackheads, but not on pimples, acne or rashes. Avoid massage with cream, as it would activate the oil glands further, and clog the pores. If there are no pimples, we recommend a pearl facial. A clove cream can be applied to prevent eruptions, and a cold compress given to close the pores.

Use a facial scrub on the darker areas of your face, twice or thrice a week. The white eruptions may be whiteheads. After washing the face, apply astringent lotion on the nose. Make a paste of Multani mitti with rose water and lemon juice and apply on the nose and darker areas of the face. Wash off when dry. Use two foundations. The one you use under the eyes should be lighter than your normal foundation. First, apply the lighter foundation. Wait for a few minutes and then apply the normal foundation on the face, including on the area under the eyes. Blend them well. A tip: Don't apply excess foundation under the eyes, as the skin there is delicate.
