Waste serves as source for innovative projects for students of Obul Reddy Public School, Jubilee Hills. At the Eco-Echo 2012 event organised by Programme for Environmental Awareness in Schools (PEAS), students showcased their concern for the environment with their projects, charts and presentations.
The three R's
The various events, exhibitions and activities held revolved around recycling and reuse of waste. The main attraction of the event was an exhibition which showcased the understanding of the children on various issues pertaining to the environment. Shubam Madhav and Shreya from Std. V took up the tree planting for their green cover initiative. “The three of us together have planted saplings in the school and also named all the trees in school. We made four charts on topics like deforestation, environmental importance, the Chipko movement and planting trees,” says Shubam.
Students of the higher classes on the other hand made exhibits with all the waste that was available to them. Mohit and Nageshwar, student of Std. VIII, said, “We made a model on air pollution with cardboard boxes and paper that was available at our homes. We also made a Power Point Presentation on air pollution using pictures that we clicked across the city.”
Anjali Radan, Principal of Obul Reddy School says “I feel such activity influences the students to become responsible citizens. Environmental awareness must begin at ones own surroundings.”
Student coordinator, Roja Rajini adds, “we discouraged the students from using plastics and thermocol. This made them find creative and innovative ways to make their projects environmental friendly”.
The students also took a green pledge to take their work forward. Dr. M. Pushpa, coordinator PEAS, lauded the efforts of the students.
