Special Children of Coastal Andhra took part in the annual sports meet for physically, mentally challenged children and visual and hearing impaired children, organised by JCI-Vizag Chapter recently at the Police Stadium in the city.

According to the organisers, this project was started in 2000 with about 90 participants from Visakhapatnam. But, over the years it has grown in size and today there were 736 participants from 19 institutions from Vizag, Anakapalle, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam. As many as 21 events were conducted separately for boys and girls under the four categories of differently-abled children.

The Kochar Prem Kumar Memorial Rolling shield for all-round performance was won by Chaitanya Institute for the learning disabled, Kothavalasa.

Deputy Commissioner of Customs B. Sumeeda Devi, who gave away the prizes, commended the efforts of JCI Vizag in organising such events to encourage special children.

Such events acted as a platform to bring out the inherent talent of children and made them feel they were also part of the society, she noted.

Managing Partner of Sree Tirumala Steel Enterprises Ramjee Grandhi stated that Special Projects brought out the sportive spirit in children and helped them to grow mentally.

The zone president Satish Kumar disclosed that JCI Vizag was conducting Special Olympics since 2000 and had won national awards for special projects several times. City President Mukesh Bhansali thanked the management and students of special schools which made the event a grand success with their participation in sports and cultural activities.
