School notes from Ongole

G. Kiran Kumar of Std. X in Z.P. High School, Atkur in Ungutur mandal of Krishna district, bagged second prize at the national-level Inspire Awards 2011, held in Delhi. Kiran Kumar displayed his work on anti-radiation shield made using zinc, lead and silver. These are useful in preventing radiation and protecting the soft tissue of the ear and brain. He was given a cash prize of Rs. 10,000 and a gold medal by S.CE.R.T in addition to another cash prize of Rs. 5,000 given by the Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi.

School assistant for physical science, B. Nagesh Kumar, gave him the required guidance. Krishna District Education Officer Krishna Reddy, Deputy DEO C.V.L. Narasimha Rao, headmistress Santha Kumari and others were present at a felicitation programme organised for Kiran Kumar.

S. Jaswant and P. Mani Kumar of Std. IX in Saibaba Central School, Ongole, won first prize in the CBSE Regional Science exhibition, held recently in Chennai.

The boys, guided by Mr. Sudarsan and Mrs. Rajasree of the school, took up a study on the ways for reclamation of a garbage dump site called “Uracheruvu” in Ongole. Their research revealed that the water in Uracheruvu is contaminated with heavy metals such as lead and zinc. The students proposed measures like Phytoremediation with water Hyacinth plants for the problem of heavy metal pollution.

The effectiveness of water hyacinth to remove heavy metals from water was experimentally tested and confirmed by the team.

This project was presented at the CBSE Regional Science Exhibition that saw participation of schools from Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala.

Students of Akshara International School helped the 300 victims of a recent fire mishap at Taraka Ramanagar in Krishna Lanka. The School Principal Sarada Anil Kumar said they contributed clothes, steel utensils, bed sheets, rice and groceries. Students of all branches of the school - Ashok Nagar, Gollapudi, One Town and Bhavanipuram participated in the programme.
