The students of St. Nissi High School recently got to learn about traffic rules and road safety in an interactive way. They spent a whole week participating in activities that helped them understand the importance of road safety and traffic rules.
Presentations
Says Omkar Balli, who along with his friends from the Tata Institute of Social Science, Mumbai, organised these activities, “We wanted to help these kids learn about safety on the roads and in traffic in a way they connected better with what they were being taught.
After a theory lesson in the same, the children participated in activities like drawing or painting what they learnt and almost 65 artworks were up on display in the school. The Cyberabad Traffic Police conducted a presentation with their Safety Education Van and had an interactive session with the kids. The children gave presentations about what they had learnt to students of other classes.”
Learning about traffic rules and road safety is very important. All of us need to learn and responsibly follow traffic rules to stay safe when we are near roads, areas with lots of traffic or even when we are right outside our homes or school. The very basic and essential rules for road safety are simple!
Always use the footpath, never walk or run across the road even if it may seem empty and most importantly, always ask an adult to help you cross the road.
Most busy roads these days have walk-over bridges which are a very safe option to use; in case a walk-over is not available, use the zebra crossing when the traffic comes to a stop.
Clear roads
Cross only clear roads and take the help of a traffic policeman if possible. When crossing a road, make sure that you never run across as there is always the danger of slipping or falling. And never try crossing at turnings.
If you're on a cycle be sure to follow the traffic signals, change lanes only when the road is clear and always keep both hands on your handle bars. When riding bicycles with friends, ride one behind another- avoid riding more than two side by side even if there is no traffic. And always remember- safety comes first!
