A few decades ago summer used to be the time when children visited their relatives, went on picnics and played with their friends. But in today's nuclear families where both parents are working, summer camps come as a boon.
Most summer camps are not more than playschools where parents can leave their kids without bother. Only a few organisers think of offering more through a summer camp, to teach the kids something that would be helpful in their daily life.
Life skills
Kool Kamp organised by Peoplepro at Bhaaratiya Vidya Bhavan at Chevayur in Kozhikode recently was one such specially designed camp to offer kids skills that are most needed in this competitive world. Through games, role plays, competitions and adventure sports the 60 children who took part in the camp learned life skills, social skills and group dynamics while their creativity, ability for lateral thinking and overcoming obstacles were also nourished in the camp.
The camp worked as a platform to develop the personality of the participants by enhancing their communication and social skills, using music and theatre as tools. The career carnival offered a sneak peak into career options through fun role plays, simulation exercises and self evaluation. The theatre training helped the kids in developing their presentation skills, voice modulation and public speaking skills.
At the end of the week-long camp, the kids had a great time sharing their food, singing beside a bonfire, staying in tents, climbing ropes, rappelling and trying out the bow and arrow for the first time in their lives.
Kool Kamp was the first camp of its type organised by Peoplepro in North Kerala. The camp was restricted to the students of Bhavan's school while Kool Kamp's next in Providence Girls School is open to all kids. Peoplepro International is a Bangalore-based company involved in framing a curriculum based skill development for kids.
