Shyam has a dirty big chip on his shoulder . He thinks everybody is against him.

Shyam will never make friends if he goes around with that attitude.

Now, some of you may not be familiar with the expression to have a chip on the shoulder .

A person who has a chip on his shoulder seems angry all the time because he thinks he has been treated unfairly and is waiting for the slightest provocation to start a fight.

Knock it off

The expression dates back to the 19th century when people wanting a physical fight, would carry a chip of wood on their shoulders, throwing a challenge to others to knock it down. When the chip was knocked off, it would mean the start of a fight. Nowadays the ‘chip’ is figurative; there is no chip of wood placed on the shoulder of an angry person. The person just acts like as if there is one! You can use the phrase while talking of people who are bad-tempered or irritable.
