Equipped with beyblades and launchers, the kids eagerly awaited their turn. Braving the hot summer afternoon, around 300 children took part in the Beyblade Metal Fusion Competition conducted by Funskool India and Landmark Bookstore in Spencer Plaza.
The competition was categorised into two age groups of six to nine and 10 to 14. As the kids battled it out, their eyes fixed on the spinning tops, their parents cheered them from the sides.
Beyblade is a high performance spinning top which is a modified from of “Beigoma” — traditional Japanese spinning tops. The toy as well as the cartoon series with the same name seems to be a hit among children. Anirudh. T, a Std III student, said “I like Beyblade toys. All my friends have it and we enjoy playing together.” Aarthi, V.C, VII, Good Shepherd School, said “I enjoyed the competition though my younger brother and I couldn't make it to the next round. Both of us like the cartoon.”
As two opponents sit face to face across the Beyblade arena, they release the beyblade onto it. The winner is the owner of the beyblade that outlasts the other. But, if you need to know more about the toy, just try asking one of those beyblade fans and you would be dumbstruck with the technical details they give you — from the theories of Physics to the minute details of the parts used.
“Beyblades are categorised as Attack, Defense, Balance and Stamina types. By mixing and matching the parts you could get the result that you want based on your strategy,” says Ashwin Rajan, X, Asan Memorial school, who got selected in the first round. “In Japan it is very popular, even adults stand in queue to play the game,” he adds.
“Beybalde is highly popular and enjoys good sales in the Indian market. The Beyblade competition was conducted for the first time in Chennai. We are planning to take it to other cities also,” said Roni Varghese of Funskool.
