To emphasise the need to conserve electricity, kindergarten students of Malar Kids School in Velur, Namakkal district, made hand fans with chart paper to beat the heat this summer.
Close to 60 LKG and UKG students of the school made the simple and effective device with the help of their teachers.
Timely thought
Director of the school N. Kanagaraj said the exhibition was organised in summer as it was the time of the year that saw more consumption of electricity than any other time because of the extended use of fans and air conditioners. Inculcating such habits to save energy at a very tender age would teach children to avoid wasting electricity, he added.
I like my hand fan because it is very useful during power cuts, says M. Bhavana (four years old), an LKG student, as she waved a hand fan when there was power shutdown in her school.
The hand fans had the words “Save electricity for future India”. An exhibition in which the children displayed their hand fans decorated with shiny colour paper grabbed the attention of the visitors and parents of the children.
Many more
Handicraft items such as pencil stand made of used tin cans, wall hangings with newspapers, greeting cards and invitations using grains and seeds were the other interesting items on display in the exhibition. The children also urged the visitors to save electricity by turning off the fans and lights when the rooms were not occupied and to recycle used materials.
