Gift a book

September 2 saw the launch of a book donation drive. This venture of The Hindu and Aviva Life Insurance hopes to reach out to kids who have had no access to education.

The Aviva Great Wall of Education, a joint venture of The Hindu and Aviva Life Insurance was launched at Bhavan's Rajaji Vidyshram, Kilpauk on September 2.The book donation drive with the slogans ‘Street to school' and ‘Education is Insurance' aims to support the education of underprivileged children.

V. Shobhana, Collector, Chennai district, inaugurated the event by placing the first book on the ‘Mini Book Wall'. Shobhana said, “Every child has the potential to make contributions to society. Education will help to build a better future. It will help to do away with child labour and juvenile crime. By donating books that occupy unwanted space in your house, you are also being a part of this cause.” She requested the students to make the event real special.

Mr. Sivaa Tamilmani, Inspector of Matriculation Schools, District Educational Officer, who was the special guest said that there are millions children in the age group of six to14 who do not have access to education and so the event will be a valuable contribution to society.

Mr. Ajith Prasad Jain, Principal, Bhavan's Rajaji Vidyashram, was also present.

The students were ready with the books and enthusiastically added their contributions to the wall. “I liked it because it is an innovative idea,” said Ritu, a student of std VIII . Meghna and Subhiksha, both of std VIII, said they are planning to donate more books in the coming days.

Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan Tamil Nadu and NGOs like Save the Children India and Vidyarambham are also associated with the event.
