How about an alert flashing on your mobile if a burglar breaks the main door to gain entry into your home? Given the spate of burglaries and robberies that have been giving sleepless nights to many in the city and suburbs, an option such as this will be of help.

Install magnetic door sensors, glass break sensors or motion sensors to safeguard your home. At least 50 families in twin cities have set up these security devices to prevent thefts and in some instances, intruders have been caught either by the family members or neighbours while sneaking into house at night. These gadgets are connected to the wired or wireless panels in which contact numbers of family members, neighbours and police can be stored. In case thieves break open the main lock, the automatic caller facility attached to the panel will dial the first phone number stored in it. If the number is busy continuously, the call will be transferred to the second phone number. Then the recipient can alert his neighbours to check the premises. At the same time, the hooter that is connected to the panel too comes alive with a sound of 110 decibel, explains G. Muthu Kumar, Managing Partner of AA Enterprise dealing with security gadgets.

A three-bed room independent house owner can install this home security system at a cost of Rs.20,000. Several families in Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Madhapur, Begumpet, Shamshabad and Dilsukhnagar, among others set up these devices. According to Mr. Kumar, the magnetic door sensor is used to monitor closed entry and exit points and is designed to send a signal to main panel when contact between the transmitter and corresponding magnetic sensor is broken.

The motion sensor is equipped with passive infrared sensors that will detect unauthorised movement in the house when alarm system is in the armed condition. It can distinguish between the movement of a pet and that of a person, thus eliminating the possibility of false alarm.

Glass break detector is a sensor that detects if a pane of glass is shattered or broken and it is commonly used near glass doors and windows to detect any glass breakages, and it triggers a signal to the main panel instantly. The wireless panel is the main connectivity of the security system and it supports all the wireless detectors, door sensors etc., according to Mr. Kumar. Police officials also suggest that installation of security systems helps in preventing thefts. Surveillance cameras enabled them to trace thieves in several thefts and a case in point is the gold heist that occurred in a jewellery shop at Begum Bazaar. Police records for the city say that 734 house burglaries were reported in the year 2011 when compared to 979 in 2010. More than Rs.35.47 crore worth property was stolen in 2011 while the stolen property worth was Rs.29.95 crore in 2010.
