The mahakumbabishekam of Sri Kameshwari Amman Samedha Sri Kachchaparameswarar temple, 51, Kadalangudi, Mayiladuthurai Taluk, Nagapattinam District, is scheduled to take place on January 30, 2012.
The temple is located between Mayiladuthurai and Courtallam. A mention about this shrine is found in the Thevaram hymns of the four Saivite saints and historical facts state that this shrine for Lord Siva belonged to the Chaturvedamangalam Tiruvelvikudi.
The Chola connection
As the name suggests, Chaturvedamangalam housed many small villages and shrines within.
Accordingly, it is believed that Kadalangudi was a small part of Chaturvedamangalam during the period of Gopi Parakesari Varman. But this place became a separate entity during the regnal years of King Vijaya Rajendran and King Gangaikonda Cholan, and came to be hailed as Kadalangudi. Built during the period of King Parantaka Chola I, the temple, of which only the lingam remains now, became extinct due to natural calamities and during the rule of the Mughal dynasty.
The lingam was found amidst thick shrubs with nandi, the mount of Lord Siva, situated at a distance of 1/2 a kilometre. With funds from devotees a concrete shrine has been constructed for the Lord. There are separate niches for deities such as Natarajar, Vinayakar, Murugan, Durgai, Ragu and Kethu inside the temple. The temple is said to be the parihara sthalam for Ragu and Kethu. It is also believed that the prayers of those who light lamps with castor oil for five Sundays continuously are answered.
