Recently, 700 students of Thambu Higher Secondary School in Press Colony were introduced to the basics of dance and music. Their teacher? Lalitha Ramamoorthy, who studied in Coimbatore and now lives in Michigan.
Lalitha, who runs the “School of World Music & Dance”, is also a nutritionist. And so, during her session, she combined the essence of music and dance and served it up with a healthy dose of motivation and nutritional advice. The students, drawn from Classes 6, 7 and 8, listened as Lalitha spoke about the importance of fitness in life. Later, she presented a few songs and dances and also got the kids to sing along. “The children learnt the basics of music and sang ‘Shakti Sahita Ganapathim’ in Sankarabharanam and ‘Shambo Gangadhara’ in Isha Manohari, with me. They seemed visibly thrilled about the experience,” says Lalitha, who is in the country for the December music season. “They sang in alignment to the shruti and it was moving,” she adds.
Happy about the response, Lalitha now plans to offer more workshops for school students during her future trips. She also visited her alma mater, PSG College of Arts and Science, and Avinashilingam Deemed University and spoke to students of nutrition about how they could strike out on their own.
