Rasikas of Carnatic music in Palakkad were treated to an evening of delightful music recently by Palakkad P.K. Suryanarayanan on the flute, Kodunthirappully Subbaraman on the violin, Ambattur Babu on the mridangam and Harippad Rajasekharan on the ghatam. Suryanarayanan, a disciple of flautist N. Ramani, charmed the rasikas with his melodious notes.
‘Chalamela,' an intricate Pada varnam, in Nattakkurinji set to Adi tala began the concert. This was followed by an alapana of Sourashtram and Puratharadasa's ‘Saranum Sidhivinayakam,' set to Misrachappu tala.
A chaste essay of Saraswathi came next. It was followed by Papanasam Sivan's ‘Saraswathi dayanidhi' set in Adi tala. Dikshithar's ‘Hiranmayeem Lakshmeem' in Lalita, set in Roopka tala, had crisp swara passages. A brisk rendition of Tyagaraja's ‘Nenethu vedakuthura' in Carnatic Behag came next.
Bhava laden performance
A bhava-laden Anandabhairavi led to Syama Sasthri's chakala kriti, ‘Marivere gathiyevvaramma' set to Misrachappu tala in gayaki style.
Patnam Subramania Iyer's ‘Marivere dikkevvaro' in Lathangi and Dikshitar's ‘Akhilandeswari' in Dvijavanthi came next.
The main raga for the evening was Sankarabharanam. This was followed by Tyagaraja's ‘Entukupeddala' in Adi tala (two kala). The manodharmaswaraprasthara done alternately by the flautist and the violinist was well received by the audience. Subbaraman's melting portrayal of the ragas elated the rasikas.
A deft tani was followed by some lighter numbers. The concert came to a close with the ragamalika ‘Chinnanchirukkiliye Kannamma' and Swati's ‘Bhajabhaja manasa' in Sindhubhairavi.
The concert was held under the aegis of The Palghat Fine Arts Society.
