Som Tewari's Sangeet Shyamala is presenting its annual show ‘Summer Festival' this Saturday. The programme will throw a feast of music and dance to the art connoisseurs of the Capital for it promises to showcase a veritable range of disciplines taught to the students of the reputed institute.
From Bharatanatyam to light music to drama and guitar, students training in varied subject-fields will present recitals of the same. While the disciples of Meenakshi Rao will give a Bharatanatyam performance, those training in ballet under the guidance of Renate Manescu will show their grip of the dance form. Also, on offer are Bollywood dance, a drama performance, Kathak recital and a painting exhibition.
The 57-year-old cultural institution was founded by Som Tewari in Kolkata with the aim of propagating the idea of cultural education as an important aspect of life. Situated in Vasant Vihar, it offers courses in yoga and karate besides Indian classical music and others.
It was in the Kolkata branch of Sangeet Shyamala where Pandit Jasraj, the foremost exponent of Mewati gharana, began his career as a junior teacher of music. Pandit Jasraj was one of the many teachers from whom Som Tewari learnt music.
While he passed on to her the nuances of classical music, Som Tewari taught the musician to read and write. The legendary Odissi dancer, Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra too held workshops in the institution.
