Nature in all its vivid splendour is not the only source of inspiration for creative output. An artist’s stimulation can come from his surroundings and social, cultural and personal experiences that find resonance in his work.
The urban world to which we pay scant attention, can also motivate an artist is proved by Nisreen Moochhala, who makes us look at it with intimacy and curiosity.
Nisreen, an alumnus of the J.J School of Art, is exhibiting her mixed media works at Artworld. There is a fine blend ofthe naïve childlike expressions and the formal training in art and design in her works.
The surface treatment with textural layering and patterns with fine detailing has a smoothening, meditative quality. The colour palette varies from monochromatic tones to a vibrant medley.
All her explorations attain a new dimension with the introduction of handcrafted paper sculptures. They enhance the aesthetic appeal.
In the work titled ‘Platform no 5’, the rich imagery of two windows of a train compartment, painted in an expressionistic manner in a monochromatic grey scale, suddenly comes alive with the introduction of a sculptural figure of a fruit seller in a green shirt and with oranges in a basket in the foreground. A little umbrella on the left adds interest to the composition.
In yet another work titled ‘Neighbours’, the artist draws our attention to the world we live in. In a three-storied building, a boy and a girl at two adjacent windows seem to be in love, while a snooping boy at a third window adds a touch of humour.
Nisreen’s urban landscapes help us revisit our milieu with a fresh perspective and vigour.
