“Students of farm science colleges should take up research and extension projects that are based on real problems faced by farmers,” R.K. Tiwari, Managing Director, National Horticulture Board, has said.
He was speaking at a workshop in Bidar to create awareness about the new varieties of horticulture crops and advanced farming methods for students and farmers. Such problem-solving mode of teaching will help prepare students better than traditional methods, he said.
He urged teachers to take up research and extension projects with the involvement of students that will help them gain hands-on experience. This will also help bring farmers closer to farm universities.
He said the board was committed to improving the area under horticulture crops and to introduce new varieties of crops whose demand is increasing. He urged resource persons of the University of Horticulture Sciences, Bagalkot, and farmers to make Bidar a model horticulture district. NHB, he said, would fund half the cost of cultivation of horticulture crops.
Dal Singh, deputy director, NHB, spoke of the emerging technologies in horticulture cultivation.
A.B. Patil, director, extensions, UHSB, said a horticulture mela would be organised in Bagalkot in the second week of December.
Mohammad Idris Ahmed Khadri, progressive farmer who won the Babu Jagajivan Ram Abhinav Kisan award given by the Union Agriculture Ministry, was felicitated.
Vice-Chancellor D.L. Maheshwar, COH Dean M.S. Lokesh and others were present.
