Admissions are through and it’s time to celebrate joining the institution of choice. But what are the hopes and dreams of students as they move from school into college for the first time? Here some students share their thoughts on this.

Manasvi Bhaskar, B.Sc. Botany (honours), Gargi College, University of Delhi

College is a lot different from high school, and so I am filled with anticipation and anxiety. I am not just going to study and burn the midnight oil but also have fun with my new friends. Along with the studies, I want to experience bunking classes, and, at times, hanging out with friends, going to different eating joints and exploring new places in Delhi. I am excited that I will get a chance to meet people from different cultures and backgrounds. I want to explore myself and know more about my interests. I am a trained Odissi dancer; now I want to participate in all college functions. A student also expects brilliant faculty, and I am elated that most of the faculty members hold doctorate degrees.

Purvaash P. U., B.Sc. Physics, Loyola College, Chennai

I expect to be exposed to more of research and important concepts, which is necessary for science students. The teaching must focus on concepts and applications rather than bookish knowledge. The college must be a place which quenches the thirst for knowledge and provides an opportunity for us to develop our skills. Professors must be our friends who understand our difficulties and help us overcome them. I hope there would be fewer restrictions than in school. Students must be given an opportunity to express their requirements. I also expect to break the monotony of sitting in the same room for all the classes. There might be a lot of cultural events and inter department and inter college activities in sports, cultural, quizzes and so on. I will also learn to be an independent person at the hostel.

Divita Gautam, B.Sc. Physics (Honours), University of Delhi

I am from Chhattisgarh. Coming to Delhi for higher studies is a whole new experience for me. We students come in with dreams and expectations in our hearts. The best part of this process is that we grow as people. We become independent, especially when we live in a different State from the one we were brought up in, like Delhi for me. My roommate is from Assam. So I will get to learn her traditions, eat her food and celebrate her festivals; this is exciting. My latest experience is travelling in the Metro, going to the college alone and travelling alone to another State. I can say that my college life will be exciting but tough. But I'm ready for the challenge.

Nadar Sneha Vetrivel, B.Com (A&F), Women's Christian College, Chennai

I have joined this college because I believe that I will get a good exposure, not only for a good career but also for personal development. I believe that I will get good guidance in making academic decisions and also many opportunities. I believe that I will become a responsible and disciplined person.

Sourabh Kulkarni, Media studies, Christ University, Bengaluru

I have always been fascinated by the media and have wondered how news is presented in different ways. Christ University is an institution which gives more of a practical experience and quite a lot of opportunities to get connected with the contemporary media. I believe a true journalist in an individual is born only when he/she gets considerable practical experiences and opportunities. I look forward to having an education here that will give me this knowledge.
