Visitors to the Palavakkam beach will soon find three dedicated parking slots.

Work has already begun on them. Two of these slots are found on Dr. Kalignar Karunanidhi Salai.

The third one is located on the beach road.

Unlike Elliot’s Beach in Besant Nagar which is crowded with shops, the Palavakkam beach is relatively spacious. This draws huge crowds from nearby neighbourhoods . “Groups of youngsters from Adyar, Besant Nagar and Thiruvanmiyur come and play here and they park their two-wheelers on the road and there is no space for pedestrians to walk,” says K. Natarajan, a resident.

Another resident Arun Kumar points out that during the weekends, there is heavy traffic on Dr. Kalignar Karunanidhi Salai and therefore a parking slot is essential.

Residents complain that though signboards for parking slots were erected, miscreants must have removed and sold them to scrap dealers. So, visitors are unaware of the parking slots. Mishrabai, a resident, says, “The facility is going to benefit only visitors who come from other localities. Generally, residents here don’t use vehicles and we don’t require one. What we need is proper illumination such as floodlights and that has not been provided yet.”

According to a Corporation official, the facility is expected to be ready in another three months.
