This is what we call a healthy way to spend time with family. For avid marathoner Nandini Ashok Kumar, running became a part of life close to two years ago, when inspired by her friends, she went for a trial run with Chennai Runner’s Pillar Pacers on Independence Day. “I was an athlete during my school days. Then there was a big hiatus. Chennai Runner’s event gave me a chance to get back to running once again,” she says.

When the next practice session, she took her husband Ashok Kumar, daughter Prakruthi (16) and son Keshav (13) along.

In the two years, Nandini has completed 14 half marathons and three full marathons. Her husband is not far behind. He has completed 12 half marathons and 2 full marathons. “My kids have participated in 10-km runs and duathlons.

The family practises together every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

“On Tuesdays, we run a distance of 6 km, starting from K.K. Nagar. On the other days, we run 10 to 12 km covering two flyovers till G.N. Chetty Road,” she says.

On Sunday, they head for the strengthening sessions, where they run from K.K. Nagar to Marina.

For this year’s Wipro Marathon, Nandini is one of the mentors for the 10-km runners, who are participating in the run for the first time. “Around 45 people are participating in the 10-km run and I am responsible for helping them increase pace and get the correct running poster,” says Nandini, a teacher by profession.
