Namma Arcot Road, a team formed to carry out Madras Week celebrations in Kodambakkam and nearby areas, plans a slew of events every year.
Binita Sashi initiated the idea of bringing people together to cheer the city and involve children too in the festivities.
While adults get to enjoy talks by historians and film artistes about the city, children get to experience its rich culture and heritage through story-telling sessions, theatre performance and art and craft.
“We have had all top speakers such as Randor Guy, V. Sriram, Chitra Madhavan, Pradeep Chakravarthy. Activities for children include kolam on paper, folk tales of Tamil Nadu, pottery making and weaving workshops and a walk down Prasad Studio,” says Binita, adding that people have shown a lot of interest in being a part of the celebration, but not too many take up the challenge of organising an event themselves.
But, availability of space has been an issue the team is up against every year. For six years, Green Park Hotel offered its conventional hall for all the events, but last year, they could not get the place.
“Though we found an alternative place, it was not big enough to accommodate all the participants. This year we are still looking for some space. Only after the space is finalised will we plan the events,” says Binita.
