After waiting for one year and a half, commuters can now use the renovated bus terminus in Mogappair East. It was opened recently for public by the officials of the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) in a small ceremony.

The renovation of the bus terminus in J.J. Nagar was carried out at a cost of Rs. 25 lakh.

Part of the money came from the MLA’s Local Area Development Fund, and the rest from MTC’s general funds.

The terminus now has a compound wall, water taps, rest rooms, an administrative office for enquires, a separate room for the MTC staff, sign boards to indicate buses with specific routes, their time of arrival and departure.

The floor level at the terminus has been raised to a height of around 1.5 feet to prevent flooding during monsoon. Steel gates will be installed early next month at the entrance of the terminus.

“In fact, this is the first time the terminus was renovated after the facility was opened in 1990. This came after years of efforts put in by residents through petitions, street corner meetings, resolutions at residents’ welfare association meetings, signature campaigns and distribution of pamphlets.

At present, the 1.5 acre-terminus operates 21 buses to places such as Thiruvanmiyur, T. Nagar, Parry’s Corner and Anna Salai with more than 5,000 commuters using the facility every day.

Earlier, commuters had to wait in the open to board buses at the terminus as the facility lacked shelters and other basic facilities.
