‘Involve us in traffic planning around new flyover’

November 14, 2015 08:27 pm | Updated 08:27 pm IST - Chennai

Residents are excited about the opening of the flyover in Thirumangalam on Jawaharlal Nehru (J.N) Main Road. They expect this development to solve many of the traffic problems that have been plaguing the region.

Residents of areas such as Shanthi Colony, Anna Nagar East, Koyembedu, Anna Nagar West Extension, Nolambur and Mogappair, however, want the traffic police to involve them in any decisions that may be taken in the immediate future as part of the new traffic arrangements planned for JN Main road.

Every day, on an average, over two lakh vehicles, including MTC buses, heavy vehicles from neighbouring States such as Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka and two-wheelers go down J.N. Main Road. Residents should be involved in traffic-planning exercises, said V. Rajagopal, president, Anna Nagar West Extension Phase – II Residents Welfare Association. As the flyover was under construction, a raft of one-way traffic systems were introduced in the area. Residents want to know beforehand the changes that are planned for these systems. Already, many suggestions from residents are pouring in. “The key street lanes and the space beneath the new flyover should be meant for movement of local residents as the flyover divides Anna Nagar West and East,” says S. Vasanthi, a resident of Nolambur.

The police have said steps will be taken to ensure that the views of the residents are taken into account before any new traffic arrangements are put in place.
