Pedestrians and commuters are unhappy that the walkers crossing at the intersection of Kathipara Road, Anna Salai, and M. K. N. Road, Guindy has been blocked.

Commuters say the huge stone boulders placed at the crossing prevent easy access to the MKN Road and Guindy Industrial Estate bus stops.

Pedestrians jumping over the medians to reach the eastern and western side of GST Road, MKN Road, and Kathipara Road is a common sight.

Chances of people getting knocked down by vehicles, as they do so, are high.

To reach the eastern and western side of GST Road, walkers have to take the pedestrian subway connecting Guindy Railway Station and Race Course Bus Stop and Alandur and an underpass below the Kathipara Grade Separator.

P. Sathyanarayanan, a senior citizen, and a resident of Race View Colony, Bharathi Nagar, says, “The boulders must be removed as the crossing provides the principal access from MKN Road Bus Stop to Guindy Industrial Estate.”

During rush hour, it is a harrowing experience for pedestrians to use the subway as it is crowded. The nearest pedestrian crossing is located near the New Life Assembly of God, Little Mount. M. Kumar, a share auto driver, said, “Ever since the boulders were placed, women, senior citizens and the differently-abled are finding it difficult to cross the intersection.”

When contacted, Chennai Traffic Police officials said many accidents had taken place at the intersection of Anna Salai and M. K. N. Road, as vehicles coming from MKN Road take a swift left towards Grand Southern Trunk Road.

“We are looking at the proposal of creating a pedestrians crossing point beyond the intersection,” the official said.
