Why is it we don't see you often on the big screen these days?
That is a million dollar question. I acted in Kalai in Tamil as Silambarasan's grandmother. It was a good role and if similar roles come my way I will surely take them up. These days, we don't get to play powerful, challenging roles on the big screen. I must thank Ramya Krishnan at whose insistence I am acting in the serial “Thangam”, which is appreciated by one and all.
You are one of the actors who scorched the screen in the Eighties. What do you have to say about it now?
Avaluda Raavugal, my first film, catapulted me to fame. This film became a huge hit wherever it was released. In fact, those who see me now find it hard to believe that it was I who played the role. It was a good film with a message and one of the best I have done so far.
But wasn't there a big gap in your career graph?
I did not act in any film from 1989-99. I staged a comeback with Olympian Antony in Malayalam. It was after seeing my performance in it that director K. Balachnder offered me a role in his serial “Ammavukku Rendula Ragu”. So far, I have acted in about 300 films in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. I'm busy with the big and the small screen in Malayalam.
Can you name some of your best films?
Avaluda Ravugal, Aalkkoottathil Thaniye (I have acted in about seven films scripted by M. T.Vasudevan Nair), Aksharangal and Sandhyakku Virinja Poovu .
Do you want to say anything to the younger generation?
Nothing. I feel they are more mature and intelligent than us.
