“Some relationships don't last for a lifetime but we still feel like it is the one that is meant to be. It can get complicated for years, as we go through other relationships. However, that one relationship still remains the most special for some reason. Even though it can be sad and frustrating when it ends — who knows what the future holds! This is what ‘Meant To Be’ is about,” says Ananya Birla describing her latest song, Meant To Be .
While a number of people of her age are attempting to discover clarity and direction, Ananya radiates brightness in all that she takes on. From being an intuitive entrepreneur to a pop songstress, Ananya, hailing from one of the leading business houses, the Birlas, she has shown that the legacy of one’s family name need not be carried on one’s back instead of talent.
With her latest song, Meant To Be , she has captured a very electronic yet pop sound. The song, in itself, is an emotive up-tempo tune, which really draws out the singer’s voice and the unmistakable and distinct texture that it has.
Starting early
Fascinated by music, Ananya got into it at an early age of nine when she learned guitar and santoor in her growing years.
It was during studying at the Oxford University that the vibrant music scene and the bustling gig culture inspired her to consider transforming her passion into a career. She started singing and playing guitar at pubs and clubs. This interest in music created enthusiasm and paved the interest for her future. However, it was not just her interest but her efforts and determination that paved the way to the place and position she holds at present. “My family is in business since long. No one has been in the entertainment industry and in the public eye. So, it was a great deal for me to get into. Some people who didn't take it well initially. It was very difficult,” says the singer. However, she adds that her parents were very supportive.
As an artist, Ananya has stopped reading the comments on social networks to block out the negativity about her work. She appreciates healthy criticisms but at the same time doesn't like denunciations or censure over her personal life. “To me, it is all about churning out good music. But, criticisms, which are personal, hurt of course. However, having said that, the love that comes when people appreciate the craft and work, just overshadows everything.”
When asked about the pressure she faces because of people’s expectations, she replies, “I don't succumb to pressure. The only expectation that I have, is from myself which is to bring out a certain work that tops the work done before. The pressure is increased now because the song ‘Meant To Be’ has done so well.”
Ananya says that she had a normal childhood like everybody else. Her inclination towards business comes naturally as can be seen by the fact that she started her micro finance company called Svatantra Microfinance P. Ltd. at the age of 17. The aim of this organisation is to provide complete and affordable financial and non-financial solutions to rural women who are entrepreneurs themselves. Ananya is truly svatantra and is creating her own legacy!
