The MTV Movie & TV Awards returned on Monday, hosted by Zachary Levi and with several Hollywood and pop-culture celebrities dominating the stage. Producers and MTV executives decide the nominees, and the winners are decided by the public in a vote — meaning commercial favourites win over critically-acclaimed movies or shows.

The clear winner of the night was the second-highest grossing movie of all time, Avengers:Endgame , which picked up wins for best movie, best hero for Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man and best villain for Josh Brolin as Thanos. Game of Thrones won best show, which was widely cheered despite fans being disappointed with the epic show’s final season.

The event also also paid tribute to Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who is the subject of the documentary RBG , as she won a new award for best real-life hero. Captain Marvel’ s Brie Larson pulled a star act on stage when she won for best fight, inviting her stunt doubles up on stage to share the award with her. Joanna Bennett and Renae Moneymaker, who worked with Larson extensively for her role as the female superhero, remarked that it was an honour to be part of bringing such a strong female character to life.
