Things are going skywards for the actress Sudha Rani. After her critically acclaimed performance in her latest release 3 Ghante 30 Dina 30 Second , she will now play the protagonist in Kanneri , which had its muhurat recently in the city. Directed by Neenasam Manju, the film was launched last weekend at Doddaganapati Temple on Bull Temple Road.

The actress, who has been careful about choosing her roles, says she is happy about Kanneri as the film talks about, “people lost in their own worlds. We have lost touch with nature and ourselves. I can identify with this role as it also talks about the things that happen in our lives when we become focussed on our careers and lose out on other important aspects in our lives. These are the two ideas that form the crux of the film. It also talks about how nature teaches us lessons and how nothing can beat the love, affection and care we receive from our own people.”

Isn’t the film supposed to be based on the mathematical prodigy Shakuntala Devi? Sudha responds, “It is not her biography as such, but it is loosely based on her life. We can say the story is inspired by her life.”

Director Neenasam Manju, who had earlier worked on the film Mooka Hakki , adds: “While my first film was like an art film, Kanneri will be more commercial in its depiction.”

He also explains what the title signifies. “The word Kanneri means ‘springs of the forest’. It is my way of celebrating the colours. I am trying to tell people with this story that it is time for new colours to come into our lives.”

Like Mooka Hakki, Kanneri is also written by Kotaganahalli Ramaiah. “This film is based on his novel and has Sudha Rani, Tabla Nani and Karisubbu in main roles.” Music will be composed by Kari Manikanth.

The film’s shooting will commence in August.
