The 2019 Emmy nominations are set to be announced on July 16, but the ballots, or the submissions from channels and streaming platforms for each category, were released on Tuesday.
HBO's flagship drama, Game of Thrones , is once again being pitched by the network as a frontrunner for the awards. But what has startled fans (after an underwhelming season that came in for a lot of criticism) is that the show has submitted the season finale 'The Iron Throne' written by showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss as their nomination for the Best Writing Category.
Yes, this was the sixth episode that appeared in many 'Worst Ever Finales' list and prompted fans to petition for a complete rewrite after being terribly disappointed over how the show finished its incredible run. GoT has stolen the show at the Emmys in previous years, but why HBO would choose a much-derided episode over other acclaimed ones in the same season like 'Winterfell' and 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' is anybody's guess.
According to the official Emmys website, 'The Iron Throne' has also been submitted for a Best Directing nod, which has enraged fans further; it remains to be seen if any wins will come out of this choice.
Meanwhile, apart from several technical submissions, a bevy of actors from the final season such as Kit Harington, Emilia Clarke, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, Maisie Williams (undoubtedly, the star of the final season) have also been pitched to appear in the final nomination list.
