Despite bagging a national film award and was the only Tamil film to be featured in Indian Panorama last year, Kutram Kadithal , directed by Bramma G., is struggling to hit theatres.

“We are desperate. The film was supposed to release after the announcement of national awards in May. I was told that a national award would help the film’s publicity. But it didn’t happen. I have been told the film will be released by the end of this month. I have been waiting for the release day,” said filmmaker Bramma, who has waited for months for the release of his first film.

Producer J. Satish Kumar, often associated with national-award winning films in the past, clarified that there has been a delay as he wanted to give the film the best chance to succeed at the box-office.

“In the month of May, a lot of big movies released, leaving us with no option but to release it in June. With Kaakka Muttai releasing in June, I was told that it wasn’t wise to release two strong films. So, I waited till Kaakka Muttai completed its run. Kutram Kadithal will definitely release in the fourth week of August or in September,” the producer said.

The film enjoyed a good run at film festivals, including the Chennai International Film Festival, where it won the ‘Best Tamil Feature’ award in the competition section.

It has garnered critical acclaim for the way it weaves a story around how a vulnerable couple deal with an unexpected crisis.

When Fox Star Studios India, which aggressively distributed M. Manikandan’s Kaaka Muttai - another national awarding-winning film, resulting in its smashing success, offered to buy the rights of Kuttram Kadithal , Mr. Kumar said that he turned down the offer. “This is a film which will win any day. In fact, I want to remake the film in Hindi.”
